Sustainability at Schluter Systems:
Certified Products & Practices

Discover how we’re building a more sustainable future—from product transparency to eco-conscious facilities.

Our Mission

Schluter Systems is committed to offering tile setters durable, responsibly produced products they can be proud to use. We operate sustainable facilities, minimize our carbon footprint, and work with like-minded partners. We support and encourage our employees to help us shape the future of our company, our products, and the communities around the world in which we operate.

Product Transparency for a Better Built Environment

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Schluter-Systems is proud to have released the first product-specific Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for an uncoupling membrane in North America—a major sustainability milestone that highlights our leadership in transparent, sustainable innovation. This groundbreaking EPD for the DITRA membrane reflects extensive collaboration across our organization and supply chain.

EPDs assess environmental impacts, including embodied carbon, and help meet standards such as LEED and WELL. In addition to DITRA, Schluter also provides verified EPDs for KERDI waterproofing membranes, and thin-set mortars. Plans are underway to further expand our EPD offering in 2025 and beyond.

Health Product Declarations (HPDs)

HPDs disclose potential health impacts of product ingredients and support healthier, safer spaces. Schluter publishes HPDs for mortars, DITRA uncoupling membranes, and KERDI waterproofing membranes—providing clear, standardized data to help meet programs like LEED and WELL. We’re continuing to expand our HPD library to align with evolving green building standards and customer needs.

VOC Testing

To support better indoor air quality, Schluter conducts third-party emissions testing and clearly reports total VOC content in our Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Our expanded VOC documentation now spans all product categories, with detailed notes on compliance with programs like California’s SCAQMD Rule 1168. These reports help project teams confidently specify low-emission products for healthy, code-compliant spaces.

Red List Free

Schluter formulates select setting materials and membranes to be “Red List Free,” meaning they are made without the most harmful chemicals commonly found in building products. This designation supports healthier spaces and more responsible material choices. Look for the Red List Free badge on our website and marketing materials as we continue to expand this offering.

Sustainable Database Listings

We ensure our products are listed in key sustainability platforms such as Ecomedes, providing architects, designers, and contractors with verified documentation to support responsible design and construction decisions.

Leading by Example

Responsible Sourcing

We collaborate with environmentally conscious companies for products we don't manufacture, emphasizing shared values in environmental, employee, and community commitment. This approach helps ensure that sustainability is embedded throughout our entire supply chain—not just in the products we make ourselves.

Responsible Business Practices

Currently undergoing a global business practices audit, Schluter is set to formalize best practices, integrating them into new hire training for comprehensive adherence. These efforts will help align teams across regions and ensure a consistent, values-driven approach to how we operate worldwide.

Sustainable Construction

Schluter prioritizes responsible building concepts in global facility expansion with LEED Gold certification for buildings like the Montreal offices and Reno distribution facility. Each new facility undergoes evaluation for innovative building techniques and materials.

Carbon Reduction

Schluter is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint through EPD efforts and carbon accounting projects. The "Reduced Carbon Footprint" mark highlights tangible results in sustainable manufacturing and distribution.
